Abstract

The physical vapour deposition (PVD) is a non-polluting and multifaceted technique which has been used to improve tools for many years. Magnetron sputtering was developed due to process improvements and enabled to generate coatings with excellent properties. Today, chromium based ternary coating systems are preferred for industrial application because of their great tribological behavior.

From a tribological point of view, surface geometries and the materials of the contact partners are of great importance. Therefore, the tribological behavior can be influenced by structuring the surface. Structures from nature, which are used to solve technical problems, are called bionic structures.

To improve forming processes, mono- as well as multilayer coating systems were combined with bionic structures and analyzed afterwards. Microscopic patterns from beetle surfaces served as a bionic model. To determine the best structure-coating-combination, numerous tests in laboratory scale were carried out. Finally, the incremental forming process was improved by applying the optimized bionic coating system.
